From page 52 of the text Military Words with Pictures, authored by the Troop Information and Education Section, HQ-AFFE, FEC 12-10.  The introduction states: "Meanings of words conform to definitions in SR 320-5-1.  Most nonmilitary words used are included in the basic English word list in English Through Pictures by Drs. I.A. Richards and C.M. Gibson of English Research, Harvard University.  Those nonmilitary words not included in the basic English word list are explained through sentences and pictures."
